Merryl Neille

Flutist and Teacher

Hi, thanks for visiting my website. Life as a flautist has been a wonderful journey through many phases of performing, teaching, composing and collaborating. My bio is really my life story! But I will keep it as brief as I can.

I live in Sydney, and work at Flutes and Flutists, the Olivanders of flutes (for you Harry Potter fans). I am working towards being an Australian composer, having written music for flute and piano that has been recorded and published. I teach at Flutes and Flutists, and have wonderful young students.

I have a DMA in flute performance from University of Michigan where I was doctoral assistant to Amy Porter for three years.

I started orchestral work at the age of 21 and freelanced for many years. I was principal flute of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra from 2011-2015 and guest principal and section flautist in several orchestras including the Freestate Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony and the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa.

I have taught, researched and performed in South Africa, the Netherlands, Canada, the United States and Australia.

I love music so much, I have always found it hard to specialize in one specific area, and have been a bit ambitious in trying to do it all. I am a little all over the place! I have played baroque flute, flute and electronics, chamber music, wind quintet, solo, symphonies, ballets, operas and have even been known to sing in choirs.

As a composer, I was a prize winner of the Flute Society of NSW Composition Competition for Winter Solstice for Flute and Piano (2020). I was commissioned to write Sighs and Silence (2021) for Karen North's publication of Lyrical Flute Legends and Ladybird (2022) and Fireflies (2022) for her Inspiring Flute Solos. In 2023 I composed Sandy Beach Toes at Sunrise for Lyrical Flute Encores and Wamberal Walk for Lyrical Flute Miniatures.

I am the director of the Australian Flute Festival, which was last held in 2023 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

I hope our paths cross in a way that leaves us mutually uplifted!
